    Carole and Winston Bumpus

Carole Bumpus is a retired family therapist who began a second career as a freelance food/travel writer. She started compiling vignettes from both French and Italian families regarding their food and family traditions. “What favorite recipe brings your family to the table?’ is her favorite question. During one interview with an elderly French woman some years ago, she asked: “So what foods did you prepare as a young wife in central France?” The woman threw her head back and said: “Food? Ma chere! Why, we were in hiding! It was the thick of WW II and we were surrounded by Germans. I was lucky to sneak out after dark to dig up a potato or two for my family. There was not so much to prepare, you see?” With this statement, Carole’s mission changed and she began writing a novel based on this woman’s intriguing story. This historical novel – “A Cup of Redemption” was published in 2014.
Her articles on food, travel and American WWII veterans in France have been published in both the U.S. and in France. After publishing A Cup of Redemption, she began writing a companion cookbook, “Recipes for Redemption: A Companion Cookbook to A Cup of Redemption” published August 2015.

Carole is an active member in the California Writers Club on the local, regional and state board levels. She has been published in three CWC short-story anthologies: Fault Zone: Words from the Edge, Fault Zone: Stepping up to the Edge, and Fault Zone: Over the Edge. And, she is busily converting her blog, known as Savoring the Olde Ways, into an upcoming series of food/travel books and is working on a new historical novel based on her trips with WWII veterans on their liberation tours from the South of France. All books can be found in the U.S. and Europe or can be ordered through her website: She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
